SA Olympians raise the bar

OLYMPIAN and amputee Natalie du Toit will be part of the formidable Swimming South Africa team that will compete at the Fina Open Water Swimming World Championships in Canada from July 15 to 23.

Another distinguished swimmer, Chad Ho, will carry the country’s flag high in the world championships at Roberval.

Both swimmers were given the nod by Swimming SA after their remarkable performances at the Telkom SA Open Water Championships in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal in April where they won 10km national titles.

The hard-working 26-year-old Du Toit is a multiple Paralympics gold medallist and she is the first athlete to carry a flag in both the Olympics and Paralympics in a single year. This happened at the 2008 Olympics and Paralympics.

She became the first amputee ever to qualify for the Olympics, where she placed 16th in the 10km marathon swim in Beijing.

On March 10 she was named the Laureus World Sportsperson of the Year with a Disability for “breaking down the barriers between disabled and able-bodied sport”.

Ho won a bronze medal at the World Championships in Rome in the 5km race – the first South African to win a medal at an Open Water World Championships.

A year before that Ho finished ninth at the Olympic Games in the 10km Open Water Swim. He achieved all this before he was 21. Both Du Toit and Ho will take part in the 5km and 10km races.
